Virgo is an earth sign in mutable mode: the only one that manages to be practical and flexible at once. Mercury rules it too, but not the airy, talkative Mercury of Gemini — the analytical one. Virgo processes reality, polishing it toward perfection. It is the sign of mastery, usefulness and quiet, active care.
The symbol is a maiden holding an ear of grain: for the Greeks it is Astraea, the goddess of justice who was the last to leave the earth, and Demeter with the harvest. The ear of grain is the key to the sign: grain must be separated from chaff, the useful from the excess. Hence the motto of Virgo: less, but better.
